55 gallon reef

Postby teh fish man » Fri May 28, 2010 9:43 pm

I have been looking around at prices and such and decided that I want to start a 55 gallon FOWLR and eventualy convert it to a reef. But, I have a few questions.
First, What fish should I get? 2 Clowns and a yellow or hippo tang are already on the list, but what else? And for the future what corals and anenomes?
Second, How much live sand and live rock do I need, im on a budget.
Third, I found a 'skilter filter' will this be suitable for filtration and skimming? Heres a link to the product, http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/p ... pcatid=364 I mean it looks sweet and its extremely well priced but has anyone used it? And I know you sometimes get what you pay for but I may give it a try. The reveiws are all pretty positive but like I said im on a budget and don't wanna waste 60 bucks on a crappy machine. :?
And fourth, do you really need R.O. water? R.O. systems aren't cheap. Though before I get corals im getting one for sure, but I don't plan on getting coral till im used to the whole saltwater thing.

Yea, nevermind on the skilter. After further searching I found it is basicly useless and super noise. Um, another question I found a 216 watt T5 High Output lamp for cheap. Is this suitable for corals in the future? Its a 'Odyssea T5 High Output lamp 216 watts "professional package"' This should fit a 55 but will it grow coral?

And has anyone used a Odyssea PS 75 Protein Skimmer? I found one for WAAYY cheap online, but will it work for a hang on back system? It looks sweet but I said the same thing about the 'skilter'.

I found a Odyssea canister filter with a uv sterilizer (Im starting to dig them) for 70$ :D but do you need a sump for these or will they be a hang on back system? If you need a sump I may get a hang on back filter with a seperate uv steralizer that would come in the future. I really love the 'Aqueon 55' filter and I think thats what I would get, if the canister won't work.

I like the 'Odyssea EX 250 powerhead' ever used one? I think one or two maybe?

Thanks

Ok, I think I know the equipment That I need but it has come time to select the fish and inverts.
I want to get a anenome. But will 216 watts be enough light for it? Im looking at the bulb anenome since it is fine with having clowns around. But will it eat a chocolate chip star or tuxedo urchin. Also some blue leg hermits and Coral banded shrimp? And will it kill my fish?

Changed the lighting system to a Odyssea Power Compact 260watt 48 inch system. This should be enough for anenomes right? :?
Filtration will be a Aqueon 55 Most likely.
I'll have a Odyssea EX250 power head.
A Odyssea PS 75 Protein skimmer.
Possible 9watt Odyssea UV sterilizer.
A Hydor Theo 300watt heater.
A Coralife Digital Thermometer.
And do you have to have a Reverse Osmosis system or even 'pure' water? Isn't that the carbons job, to remove unwanted chemicles. I need to know ASAP
